Our HOA has seven board members. There are five vacant board positions for the next election. How many votes does each homeowner get? Do they get five votes each to spread among the candidates?

Have you looked in your bylaws to see what they say? Many communities have one vote per home, with the top 5 vote-getters filling the open positions. But your community may do it differently.

If 5 seats up for election, typically owners would vote 5 times on a ballot.
Another important question to answer is whether your bylaws and/or HOA state law allows cumulative voting . . . voting multiple times for a single candidate (e.g., casting all 5 votes for one person, or 2 votes for one person and 3 for another person, or some other combination).
Also important to know that typically when it comes to voting during elections, multiple owners of a single lot (e.g., husband & wife if both on deed) get only 1 ballot . . . so they must decide together how their 5 votes will be cast.

This is my association's bylaws worked, each lot gets one vote, top 5 get elected.
Escaped former treasurer and director of a self managed association.
