We were approached by [removed due to posting rules] to install fiber optic cable TV at a very substantially reduced rate to our current co-ax cable rate. A) Does anyone have any experience with Fiber vs. Cable? Any advatages/disadvantages? B) We operate under Ch. 720 laws in FL. If we decide to switch providers of this service, does this require a vote by the homeowner's association or can we do this simply with a Board of Directors vote.

BeauR If we had that option I would JUMP on it right now. With Fiber optics you can recieve higher resolution pictures and have one line that connects your phone, Computer, TV etc GO OFR IT.

Beau,
Our association was also approached by the company. Our presentation included the installation of equipement that we would have to purchase and own at a cost of many thousands of dollars. Once that was presented to us that way, it then becomes a matter for the entire association to vote on because it would become a "special assessment" to the owners.
If you consider this system, please make sure that you have every dollar listed for the expense to the owners. That could be the deal breaker. Most Florida H.O.A. docs list "cable" as the provider so the Board will not be able to change this at their will.
(Fiber Optics are awesome)

Our property was appraoched by a large telecom company here in NY.

The installation was done at no cost to our property and in the end we were paid a fee for each unit in which the installation was completed.

I understand this company will only now install on properties of 100+ units at no cost to the property. Hoping to make their money back with service contracts at a certain rate.

They are now offering internet and phone service with TV promised to follow sometime soon.

Offered this way I saw no choice but to go forward.

We did have some issues with the installation but in the long term this was a win-win for our property.

Those using the service have rave reviews about the spped for their internet connnections.

It is still "fiber-optic cable" even though it uses photons instead of electrons to transmit the data.

We have owned a patio home 6 months in a new development that started with fiber optics. We have had nothing but problems and they are talking about turning over the service to a local provider. They have changed "systems" 4 times in the 6 months trying to get the problems resolved. Technology is good when it works.

Whether it is Fiber to the home or coax cable to the home it all depends on the provider. Regular cable can do the same as fiber if it is maintained and fiber also has to be maintained, one little microscoptic piece of dust can cause problems with fiber or a micro bend so it all depends. cable can do everything on one line too.
