Hello everyone. As you can see I am very new to this site and am looking for advice. I was elected to the board of my HOA this past weekend. Our board consists of three positions...President, Treasurer and Secretary...when running for the board, you are running for a position on the board but not a specific title. Because of some past issues within our community and a member that has been on the board for too long (8 years) we can not seem to come to an agreement as to who is going to hold which position. Our documents just state that the board will decide who is what...I personally feel it should be based on the number of votes received...that would move the current president to treasurer and he is not happy with that choice and not willing to compromise! Any advice on this situation would be greatly appreciated!

First, congratulations Judith and welcome to the forum! You will find a lot of good information from some very knowledgeable people on this site.

I don't believe that because of a vote count a person should be positioned on a board. I am the Treasurer of my community, accounting and finances are my forte. Our Vice President knows nothing about financial matters and freely admits it. It would have been a shame if he had to be the Treasurer by virtue of the number of votes.

When we were elected, we went into a room and discussed who wanted what position. We decided positions based on our individual strengths and weaknesses.

Judith,
A discussion among the directors is good advise to see ones weakness or strength. Either volunteer and if two people want the same postition you vote for it. That is why you always have a odd number of directors.
Good Luck. The secretary and treasurer are usually the hard psitions to fill.

JudithW1 - I understand you are looking for a democratic method to shuffle positions. However, it's my belief the officer position should be based on qualifications/area of expertise, not the # of popular votes. Basing an officer position on popular votes suggests that one position is more worthy than another, a correlation I would not make.

Thank you so much for your replies...problem is that both guys are equally qualified for the positions. Unfortunately it is the belief of the new member (only the president was willing to run again and he only secured the votes from the proxies he brought with him) that the president needs to step down and relinquish the position in order to get some "new" ideas and leadership. While I am aware that all the positions are technically equal and it really is not much more than a title and formality it matters so much to the current president that you can clearly see it is affecting his judgment. Basically the title has really gone to his head and he needs to "reeled in". Guess I will sit back for now and let them fight it out for a little bit...maybe, they will come to a mutual agreement soon!
