Federal Law says that no H.O.A. or other organization may ban the flying of the American flag on your property. They can only restrict the size and placement. Example--Donald Trump vs. Palm Beach with his monster flag at Mar-A-Lago
If your documents do not have any restrictions on other types of flags, then they must have a restriction added per an amendment that goes thru the owners by a vote. But in their defense--what kind of "other" flag are you wanting to fly? Is it controversial or offensive to the neighborhood? Living in close proximity to others, we need to sometimes control our urges to express or individuality or messages.

If you review 720 there is a mention of the flags of the armed services may be flown on certain (holi)days. I don't recall if it is addition to the "stars and bars" or instead of.

Laverne, I read your post again and it sounds like you are not talking about the American Flag. Are you talking about a decorative flag that sometimes advertises the holiday? or is decoration itself? You will have to check your CC&R's or doc's if this is what you meant. HOA's sometimes restrict the use of a decorative piece outside of the home.

Laverne, if the flag hanging on the mail box post is the one in question, the HOA is correct. You cannot hang anything or even personally stuff a mail box. This is illegal. The mailbox, what goes in, on, and around it are the property of the Federal Government. They frown on hangings or stuffing, but most can plant around, as long as does not interfer with the box door.

Everyone , almost all of our homes have the flags flying from the mailboxes. I have been here 9 years and no problems with that. It is behind the box and does not interfear with the mail door. The question is can i fly TWO American flags on the same property?

Let me correct the 1 Flag only. The statute says that you must be allowed to fly AT LEAST 1 flag. If your documents do not say anything, then you can fly 20. If the Asociation says "NO" , it must be stated so in the CC&Rs. Otherwise, you can be as patriotic as you want. Just remember, you have neighbors so be considerate of their feelings.
