Out of curiosity:

What's the most petty and vindictive thing that you've seen a HOA board do to an owner, or an owner do to a HOA?

There are so many stories on this board about malicious board members and malicious owners in HOAs. What is the most egregious, petty and vindictive thing you've seen them do?

Thanks.

I can't think of any at my HOA. We all get along at least on a business sense and most are friendly.

At my last HOA we had a couple that was divorcing show up at the annual meeting, each claiming they had the right to vote. They got nasty to each other. They were asked to step outside and settle who would vote. Thye left and no one came back.

Last fall, I, HOA President, and an active volunteer, each received blue envelopes in our mailboxes. Each was addressed to each other, with the return address being, well, each other.
It contained a vial, disgusting, personally attacking rant to both of us. Some of the more despicable portions are quoted below. Yes, the entire rant was in caps and bold font.

The letter also contained personal information about each of us, so we quickly knew who to look at for writing it. With handwriting comparisons, they handwrote the envelopes, we verified our suspicions.

All persons involved were previous Board members who resigned when I wasn’t on the Board.

Yes, we both still live there and are still active. Luckily, we are separated from these witches by a couple of blocks.

YOU ARE BOTH THE BIGGEST PIECES OF S***.
WHO THE F*** DO BOTH OF YOU THINK YOU ARE?
YOU ARE BOTH THE BIGGEST C**** THAT EXIST.
SMILE ONCE IN A WHILE, YOU NEED TO GET LAID.
YOU ARE PATHETIC AND RUDE.
YES, YOU ARE DOING SOME GOOD THINGS FOR OUR COMMUNITY………BUT
YOU ARE DISGUSTING HUMAN BEINGS AND BIGOTS.
WE PITY YOU. GO TO A PRIEST AND GET THE DEVIL OUT OF YOUR SOULS. DISGUSTING HUMANS. YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELVES.

Love the closing remark:

LEARN TO BE NICE TO PEOPLE AND KIND TO PEOPLE. AND YOU WILL BE BETTER HUMANS.

I've never seen anything I'd classify as vindictive. I've worked for lots of boards whose members could be petty. One board would only open the pool from Memorial Day to Labor Day (in Texas, where it is easily 90 degrees in April and half of October) and would not allow food or drinks in the pool area, wouldn't pay for a shade structure or additional pool furniture. They made the pool as uninviting as possible for reasons I still don't understand. They had tons of money, they just didn't want to spend a dime on anything.

Another board would not allow benches or trash cans in the community park because the board president had a view of the park and wanted to look out on untouched, pristine grass, not kids playing.

And there are always the individual board members that are super into issuing violations for anything and everything.

Where to start? LOL...

The Ex-President is a scumbag. He claimed he got me elected. He did so because he thought he could control me. Basically, a way to get to the HOA's money without looking "unethical". I ended up basically cutting off his "food" supply and getting things right.

Anyways fast forward a few years. I decided wanted to buy a 2nd home in a non-HOA neighborhood next door. Put my HOA house up for rent. This meant quitting as President as wanted to move on with less stress. Going to stay as a Board Member.

Well the Ex-President decided behind my back to get a "Mutiny" started. He picked out the people he wanted on the board. Convinced the new board volunteers that I was a liar, withholding money, and was stalking him. (Yeah moving away from a person just screams "stalker" doesn't it?) As you can guess these were things he was doing himself...

So at the new election these new board people showed up with their pitch forks. Knew it was coming as I had spent the night before talking the "new" president to be on the phone. She was drunk and spilling the beans at 2 am... One of the new board members was a woman that the Ex-president had been dating. She chased me out and tried to beat me up. Found out later they had gone door to door telling very different stories about me that weren't true to get a special assessment passed for work not needing done. They spent the whole entire month's budget not realizing how budgets worked...They told people I had stolen the HOA records even though they were INSIDE the clubhouse closet where they hold meetings!

In the end, I moved on. A few months later many of the members came up to me and admitted they had been lied to. They also wanted to get rid of that board and elect me back. (I was still board member). I was burnt out and no longer wanted those type of people in my life.

It's the crooked and ethical questionable people that causes the most issues. Just don't live that way in your life. Crap washes off when you hold your head up high!

How about a neighbor that destroys some landscaping because they think it’s on their property only to have a survey done to reveal it wasn’t.... That same neighbor mows only to the perceived line and leaves a strip of grass taller than what he just mowed EVERY time on that line... Same neighbors who didn’t have an issue with Christmas decor on a shared mailbox for years decides they don’t want it on their half even though the mail lax housing isn’t on their property at all now is it on the property line. Same neighbors who had the survey done still mow and weed eat up to that mailbox which isn’t their property. Sends a letter from an atty stating that if they ever lose power from the landscaping planted around the electrical box on the neighbors property, they’ll sue them. There are many more but I’ll leave it at that..... LOL

I think the pettiest thing I saw almost happen in my former HOA was not even against another resident, it was towards someone who didn't even live in our HOA.

This was a townhouse/condo HOA with a fair amount of open area with grass, trees, and shrubs that was adjacent to a neighborhood of single family homes whose backyards were directly adjacent to our property. Some of them had fences, some didn't. On one of the lots that didn't have a fence, the owner would sometimes go onto our property by about five feet or so with his riding mower when cutting his grass. He wasn't damaging anything on our property, so it really wasn't a big deal, except to our board president.

For whatever reason, he thought this guy occasionally barely coming onto our property with his mower was the worst thing ever. So, instead of doing something reasonable like, I don't know, just asking him not to do it, he instead wanted to have a large boulder moved from another area of our property to the edge of our property line next to this guy's yard so he couldn't mow our grass. We would have had to hire a crew to do this, of course, and re-landscape the area where the boulder used to be (it likely had not moved since the end of the Ice Age). This would have cost us some money, of course.

Fortunately, the rest of us said no and wouldn't vote to do it.

It's not a PDF file, it's a JPG image. Rename it and change the extension from .pdf to .jpg. All I see is a corral, some brush, a pickup truck in the background, and a building beyond that. Not sure what it's supposed to show.

GenoS I must be doing something wrong. It is a .pdf, <200 kb. won't load so I cannot 'splain what you are looking at. I can send you the jpg or pdf by email, happy to do it.

You are looking at my southward view. The corral is a riding arena, I am standing at 30' from my front property line. The truck you see is in the driveway of my newest neighbor...... his neighbor to the south and our other neighbor to the south. If we all had a 150' set back, would someone be hidden from view? We have 5ac+ each. C'mon!!!!!

Did you post this to the wrong thread? I see no context to explain what your issue is.

I think it has something to do with a neighbor being a jerk with regard to mowing and the property line. A demonstration of petty vindictiveness.

I re-packaged the picture into a PDF for easier viewing.

Is it possible that the documents people had only said 50' setback?

Petty and vindictiveness here. The builder on said lots, we'll call them S1, S2, S3. As you see the first one (S1) the driveway practically skirts my riding arena. The house is clearly not 150' from the frontage line. Built last year and which I had been vocal in my objections. He has built 2 other houses here. He is on the Site committee. Yes, he approves his own plans. Our Board had the brilliant deduction that they could make up rules, that usurp the CCR's. period. This particular house is my main concern as I feel this house stupidly close to the road, their children, 2&4, are too close to the road, their vehicles pile up on a short driveway, and lastly, we lived with massive snow piles encroaching the right of way. Did I say we get a lot of snow in WY? This is probably the reason for 150' set-backs in the first place.

"I feel", given a bad rapport with the board, "this house has a stick-it-to-Teri feel to it. I'd go so far as to demand moving it. The board is charged with not allowing any structure to remain, which is in non-compliance with the DCCR's. It's a contract, right?

Had a guy build massive signs in his front yard that were not fit for youngings to read passing on school bus. They told off his neighbors and he has guns in his windows. He was a renter and that made it a little hard to get him off the property or fine him. back and forth for months (and he made new signs when the sheriff or HOA people came to his house). many many months. eventually he moved but there was tons of press about it and youtube videos....
