Hello,

I'm in a pickle - I paid a large premium for my view lot and now 6 years later, a couple huge pine trees have grown and are completely obstructing my view. Already checked city ordinances and HOA CR&Rs, NO VIEW PROTECTION (yes - the young, dumb, inexperienced me did not think this through) - anybody have any idea if there's anything else I can do to get these pine trees trimmed off the top? The HOA is saying that cutting the top off the trees will subject them to diseases, etc... Can I take it to the board that trees need to be a certain height? The trees are on a hill on the back of my house - common HOA property. When it's windy, the pine needles are also constantly in my yard and pool - certainly a nuisance. Any help is appreciated!

Offer to cut them down and replace with some kind of more fire resistant tree or bushes or landscape design. Be prepared to pay a lot of $$

Sue's suggestion is a good one. Topping trees hasn't been an approved method of tree treatment for many decades.

I agreee with Sue & NpS. I don't see any other options for you. The cost to remove/replace the pines might be recaptured with the gain of a much better view, which, as we know can add a great deal to a property's value.

Find out who is responsible for the trees. The HOA may not be able to afford to take the trees down. My own experience Pine trees are at minimum 1K to cut down. (Not counting tree stump grinding). As someone else suggested, offer to pay to have the trees cut down and request another tree species to replace them with. Pick something that won't grow fast, high, or suck up water. Your city may have a "tree board" that can offer advice on the best tree to plant.

Thanks for the responses. I guess I'm just mad (mostly at myself) that this even happened in the first place. This is my first home so the thought of view protection didn't cross my mind.. I hope other people know before they purchase paying a premium for the view! I feel incredibly dumb and cheated lol.
