Around 5 years ago, we had a hailstorm that damaged roof shingles in our community. Owners are responsible for their own roofs. Around 40% of the the owners got their roofs replaced under insurance claims.

Some of the new roofs are showing dark streaking. One of the owners saw that our spec roof shingle has a 10 year warranty against Algae forming on the shingles. The actual streaking looks like the pics we've seen showing algae formation.

Does anyone have experience with this kind of warranty? Any advice would be appreciated. Thx.

I'd bet the shingle warranty isn't worth a hill of beans.

Roof waranty = worthless.

$45 for a pack of shingles at 14 pieces per pack = $3.41 each shingle Since the shingle is 5 years old they will pro rate it at 50% so you might get $1.70 per shingle if your lucky. Now count up the number of shingles you have lots of algae on and that's what you MIGHT get for a check if your lucky.

Basically a worthless warranty, since most of the cost in roofing is the labor.

The algae can be removed with a soaking of a cleaning agent containing bleach. The solution should be sprayed on to the roof, let sit as per instructions, then rinsed off with clean water. Might need a power washer to get the solution and the rinse up that high. Do not power wash the roofs.
