We are trying to decide between aluminum and wrought iron for our new community fence. The appeal of aluminum is it requires no maintenance and according to our reserve specialist, if you use aluminum, you no longer have to save for a new fence in your reserves - they consider it a lifetime improvement.

For those who have used aluminum, what have been your experiences?

I would not say that Aluminum fencing won't be subjected to maintenance. Not sure who would make that claim. It is LESS maintenance but there still the risk of damages. May need painted as it's exposed to heat and chlorine gasses. Plus wear and tear as kids will play... Wrought iron similar conditions.

I'd go check out a few fences and see how they held up over time. Wouldn't completely eliminate it from the budget as a "lifetime" expense. Maybe make it more like a lifetime repair/maintenance expense.

I would be worried that an aluminum fence would be more attractive to metal thieves than wrought iron. Depending on your landscape and aesthetics. steel that looks rusted is making an appearance here in vegas.
