I have been a proactive home owner in our community addressing many violation issues that have gone un addressed for many years. Just today the President of our community sent out an email to the management company and board members, not realizing that my email was part of the group, and his very words were "he's a dick." Are not the board member held accountable by some Florida Statute?

Can they prove your not one? Sorry to say, but for it to be considered anything, it has to be proven. How is anyone going to prove you are or are not a "dick"?

JoseV, Florida statutes and case law do not prohibit rudeness, crassness, vulgarity et cetera directed at an individual such as what you have unfortunately just experienced.

For what it's worth, such unprofessional conduct by the often ego-driven volunteers that end up on HOA boards is pretty common. A 'herd mentality' often develops on boards (or in any social milieu), where a majority enjoys harassing a minority director or perhaps a non-director HOA member. It makes them feel big. One can develop a thick skin. Or to me, when a board has such ignorant people like your President (elected by the other directors) serving on it, the better alternative may be to not serve on the board.

Tell him to bend over and you'll show him how big a d**k you are.

Nope. Uncouth and unprofessional language is not against the law. I would argue that's a good thing. Use it as ammunition when you run against the guy for the board seat.

Board members are no better and no worse than the pool of homeowners from which they're chosen. Unfortunately, HOA politics seems to encourage some folks to become the worst version of themselves, rather than the best. It reminds me of a comment someone made about academic departments: "The politics are so vicious because the stakes are so low."

A thick skin will serve you well.

Just a little advice from Iowa nice.
1. Do not engage in back and forth insults with this person.
2. Let it go.
3. If you are being one, stop.
4. Choose your battles and don't nit pick.

Nope, that's an opinion. There's nothing illegal about the statement.

Thank you very much for sharing your thoughts. We are hoping on replacing all board members this coming election year.

Thanks for your input. I guess the proper thing to do is to replace the entire board on the next election.

To understand the true nature of what's going on you would have to live here. Nevertheless, thank you

Welcome to living in a HOA... The nicknames included "Dictator, *itch, know-it-all, Hitler, and Turkey"... Those were the names to my face... LOL!

JoseV, Everyone living in an HOA/Common Interest Community has a story to tell. Maybe your HOA president was growing frustrated with some of the problems that can come up with HOA living. It's hard not to engage when you have been insulted. If you are truly bringing up issues that are important than keep up the good work. I'm just not one to complain about small things. I've seen some pretty strict HOA rules about everyday living that can be awfully petty. I'm not saying that is how you are as you are correct, I cannot know the situation in your community. Hopefully some of your issues will get resolved and if that means changing leadership than go for it. - Bancs
