HOA solutions for habitual stop sign running

Hello all,

Our HOA streets are all 100% public roads, subject to DOT traffic laws. They are regularly patrolled by local police. We have many stop signs and almost all of them get run...a lot...every day. We have a great relationship with local police who encourage us to call anytime we see this and the more calls they get, they step up visibility and enforcement. The problem is still pervasive. We have over 400 homes with residents in all stages of life. Families, singles, empty nesters, etc. People, kids, dogs, bikes, etc...everywhere! We have a vibrant and active community that spends a lot of time outside. The continual running of signs, often at not insignificant speeds, is a disaster waiting to happen

I can't imagine we are the only neighborhood who has this issue. What ideas have other HOA boards tried to implement to curtail private citizens running public stop signs on public streets, and what sort of results have you seen?

The only thing that will deter this illegal activity is enforcement. Every person who has ever received a ticket corrects their behavior even if only for a short time. The more the Police are seen in the area writing tickets the better the behavior. Encourage, beg them to be more proactive in your neighborhood. Ask every homeowner to write to the City and ask for more patrols. The squeaky wheel does get greased.

As others have said, you can't fix stupid, and sadly, it may take a few car accidents and people getting injured before it's addressed. That's how we finally got sidewalks on the public street in front of our community.

My community isn't far from the local police department and our courtesy officers (both off duty cops) are posted there. We've told them to pass the word that their colleagues are welcome to drive through with extra patrols or to sit in the parking lot to eat lunch or complete reports. Anyone acting naughty may get a speeding ticket and people do straighten up when they see a police car in the area.

Since these are public streets, speed bumps may be out, but if the association is willing to pay for installation and maintenance, maybe the city can be persuaded to allow them - see if your local representative can help with that.

I'm less concerned about damage to objects than I am about a person being struck by a vehicle.

Ask the city about getting speed bumps put in. If they say no because of cost, ask if the HOA can pay to have them installed.

A well sized speed bump will make the stop sign almost irrelevent. Even if people don't stop they'll have to slow way down to keep from ruining their vehicle.

Speed bumps also slow down emergency vehicles. They are expensive. It may be better to see if can have reflective tape/paint put on the road way to warn for a stop. Looked into speed bumps. They require a certain amount of traffic as well. Wouldn't recommend them overall.
