Hello all,

Our board has a lot on it's plate.

What are the pros & cons of scheduling several meetings at one time?

Any Dos and Don'ts of scheduling several meetings at one time?

Thanks
Tammy

It's quite practical, since everyone will be able to list the meetings on their calendar.

You say your board has a lot to address, so what you really need to do is set priorities. Use one meeting to do that and then concerns on that issue. You should consider setting up some advisory committees to do research on specific issues and bring recommendations to the board. That can cut down on the work that needs to be done without burning everyone out.

I should also mention that once a month for board meetings is plenty - you do have a life outside the HOA. Do the same time every month e.g. Third Wednesday of the month

You can also do work sessions for discussion purposes only. No motions made, just information and Q and A. (These work sessions must be noticed to your members)

Advice is much appreciated. Thank you.

It is our LOAs misfortune to have not understood that they were actually an HOA for the past decade, and bound by State Statute and the HOA Act. Although a former board filed a 'Notice of Homeowners Association' in 2014, reminding them of their responsibilities, it seems nobody really 'got it'.

Our association is non-compliant in many areas and holy smokes, when we read a statute at the last meeting, one of the 'long time' directors said "Well, I disagree." Too much meeting time has been spent explaining compliance to resistant minds. Time to 'catch up'. Our annual meeting is in 4 months, and we'd like to be somewhat squared away or at least have a clear idea of where we're headed by then.

Thanks again Shelia.

Hi Sue,

Thank you for the guidance. Truly appreciate the 'discussion purposes only' suggestion.

It’s not a suggestion. No business can be conducted or motions made at work sessions. It’s the law.

She's in New Mexico, so what's against the law in Michigan may not be the case here.

That said, it's true that work sessions ARE NOT the place for voting on specific actions - save that for a regular board meeting. To ensure homeowners are kept in the loop, why not call them brainstorming sessions and invite homeowners to sit in, leaving time for questions and input on what's being discussed? Tell everyone at the start this is a brainstorming session only - no decisions or proposals will be made on anything.
