Does anyone have any comments pertaining to the regulations concerning sound alarms for HOA pool gate entries. When a person gate to the pool, is there a requirement that the gate buzzes (sounds an alarm) when someone either enters the gate t go to the pool or when a person exits the gate when leaving the pool? I would think that there must be a ruling on this that would apply to anyplace in the US

Alex,

I'm not sure I understand you. Why do want a buzzing sound when the gate is opened or closed? In my community there is no lifeguard and it's a swim at your own risk amenity. What purpose would a buzzing sound serve?

I've never heard of any requirement for that either and like JohnT, we have the same set up and fob controlled gates. Our pool is only maybe 30 ft rom our tow high rises. An alarm would drive us all nuts.

I think you ask us pool questions frequently, Alex, and frequently one or more of us reply to look at your muni codes for swimming pools.

Alarms drive all crazy... some years ago the county pool inspectors said we had to have a buzzer in view that many would prop the gate open in order to let their friends in who were coming a little later.... thus a safety hazard for kids, etc.... so after a number of years, I began asking what dictates we must have an alarm system and I am beginning to get mixed signals... to the point that maybe it was not true that the County required an alarm system for entering/exiting.

I don't think there is a requirement for this. It's a good idea in certain situations but not necessarily public access pools. Who's going to respond or monitor? Call your county and ask. Our county has a department that inspects public access pools. They are quite overwhelmed so their inspections are far and in between. They also do private pools on occasion if reported. (My neighbor has an neglected in ground pool that stays green most the year and attracts mosquitos).

I just know of pools required to have fences around them. The height may vary for your county. Otherwise, it's more a chemical upkeep type of thing.

Now there are alarms you can purchase for pools to alarm if someone falls into the pool. Usually for unsupervised children when not supposed to be in the pool area. It would be difficult to monitor for a HOA pool.

FYI: I had a step-brother who at 8 years old climbed over a fence of his aunt's pool. He hit his head and fell into the pool. His mother found him in the water about 5 minutes after it happened. He was permanently brain damaged. He died at age 21. So for me it's a great idea for such alarms to exist for pools. The practicality of it not so much for a HOA pool not monitored.

In New Jersey the regulations come from the state and the county enforces them. Sometimes the city adds additional rules. We have rules on signage, how long pumps have to run, first aid equipment, safety equipment and many more but none that require an alarm when people enter the pool area. Our state rules can easily be found on the Internet.
