We are planning on getting bids from different companies. What I'm really hoping to find is an affordable company that can do a good job on maintenance and also help us to change out landscaping to more drought resistant landscaping. Any suggestions? We are in Fullerton, CA (Orange County).

If you're looking for company names, that's against our Posting Rules (above). You might try to vista the web sites of nearby HOAs whose landscaping you like. Get the name of the General Manager or board president if no manager, contact them and ask for the contact info of the landscaping company.

Invite three that seem good to visit your HOA, walk with directors or the manager and then the board can interview each.

Are you on the board, Jack? Have you or a committee been assigned this task?

If your board already has approved its operating budget for 2019, you might not be able to increase that particular line item unless you have a large contingency line time or other area with room for an increase in your annual contract..

Darn, was looking for company names. Yes, looks like I will have to drive around and find associations that I like. I'm on the board as treasurer and architectural committee. I have already requested that getting bids be but on our next agenda (December). We have accepted the budget, but from what the manager has told me, the line items are somewhat flexible. I'm actually hoping to save money, not increase he cost. So we will see.

Spouse & I just took the train from DTLA to Fullerton last week to visit old pals in Brea for Halloween & the fun trick-or-treaters who stopped by.

Good luck, Jacki.

All I can say is be careful when you hire a new landscape company. Ask questions about the people they hire and their credentials, and what their turn over rate is. Landscape companies here in Vegas face such high turnover rates that many of the landscape companies put a team of new hires in one community where these workers chop the place to bits because they don't have experience. Don't be afraid to get bids from the BIG BOY'S and don't just take the first bid from Joe and his team of weed whackers. Take your bids from the Big Boys and work with them to tailor to the specific needs of your community

Here is just a hint of what to expect for bids
If you are looking for bids where the landscapers maintain each front of home $22-$24 dollars per month
If you are looking at landscaping for all the common areas look for the cost to each homeowner around $13-$17 per month

This is a rough Idea of what we pay here in Nevada, and all the homes in the HOA I live in are Xeriscape as well.
