Hi!

This past Fourth of July some of our homeowners got together and set off quite an extensive fireworks display off the end (swim platform) of our large wooden (and encapsulated foam) wooden dock. This dock was tremendously expensive to build. It has 20 boat slips and also some waverunner slips, all of which have boats or waverunners on lifts within them. The dock is insured, but when I called up the insurer on another matter I happened to ask about whether the community dock association would be insured against loss by firework-related fire or damage. Their answer? No!

I sent out an email and, of course, the people who were setting off the fireworks (who are also insurance agents) called me back immediately and said that our policy could NOT exclude fireworks and related damage since it is 'fire.'

Someone is telling me a story here and I don't know who.

I will be calling our agent this morning, who by the way has sold us a policy that is about $2000 less expensive than we were quoted by other companies, and ask him or her (it varies who I talk with from day to day) to send me a letter that actually spells out our lack of coverage for fireworks damage if, in fact, that is true (although I won't tell them that I am questioning their veracity). If I get such a letter, I will then send it out to our property owners.

I have read over our policy and, truth be told, I do not see any exception for fire resulting from fireworks.

Can the insurance company have their own company exclusions?

I would like to know, if possible, before I go to them and ask for the letter.

Thank you.

Your dealing with insurance agents... Not the best known group of people with a long history of accuracy. It's best to get a copy of the exact policy. I also would not push the fireworks statements. Your basically admitting your HOA is participating in shooting off fireworks. It's just better to ask more "general" questions than specific. Your not doing yourself any favors for being so specific.
