My husband and I live in a 2 unit complex.

Our neighbor downstairs left a note for us "telling" us that they were letting their teenage "step" granddaughter and a "friend" live with them temporarily. Well, 2 months later and they are still here. The basement is a common area, however, the teenagers have taken the area over as if it were their own studio apartment completely disregarding the fact that we have our washer/dryer in the area. It has turned into a complete and total unpleasant living experience for he and I. When he asked the unit owner how long they would be here, we were told 30 days "grace period" for them to find jobs.......

Can anyone help guide me in this situation so that we can hopefully get our point across that we didn't purchase our condo with teenagers living in the common area.

You do not state you are in an HOA (Homeowners Association) condo community and if, as a resident, you are bound by certain CC&Rs, official documents.

Regardless of the fact HOA or not, this sounds like a question to pose to your Code Enforcer or Zoning Officer of your City/Town.

I agree with Gloria, in order for a basement to serve as a bedroom you have to have certain exit requirements. Start there, if that doesn't work start doing laundry at 3 am, that might get the point across too!

As posted above. I too would think you should check with local city/town code enforcement.

I know here in Georgia there are certain requirements, as BradP had posted, one must follow in order for a basement to be considered living space. I'm a homeowner with a basement, I’m familiar with some of these requirements. One of which the space must have the basics, running water both hot/cold, electricity, Central heating, an exterior entrance and most importantly a window (in bedroom), for fire safety. I believe even a fire detector(s) maybe requirement. I would think so anyway, but now certain, never pursued it any further.

Depending upon what your state requirements are there may not be an exterior entrance or any windows, many of the Northern states don’t have daylight basements or windows for that matter (size).

What City and State do you reside in? Perhaps we can further assist you in your search for answers to your predicament.

I’m sure there are others I’m unfamiliar with. I certain think you shouldn't be having all the problems you've been having.

Best of luck and keep us posted
