Hello-
I recently joined my neighborhood's Architectural Review Committee. When I was asked to join, I thought my role would just be to approve fences, paint colors, etc, but recently, the HOA board has asked the committee to help enforce yard maintenance. We have 5 committee members, and each have an assigned section of the neighborhood (about 50-75 homes per member). We are expected to drive or walk our sections on a regular basis to ensure compliance. We take note of the violations and then email to the management company to send letters to the respective owners.
My main question to the group is whether or not it is in the best interest of the neighborhood to have the HOA committee policing yards. Is it the norm to have HOA members riding around writing up violations, or is it typically part of the management company's role to do this on an established frequency? On one hand, I think it is great to have neighbor led ownership and pride in ensuring the neighborhood looks good, but I also worry about committee members getting bad reps for 'turning in' their neighbors. The committee is supposed to remain anonymous, but I don't think its really a secret. Any thoughts?
