Our community is almost 40 years old and the lamp posts need repair/maintenance/replacement. I would like the board to consider changing out the lamp posts for solar powered lamp posts. The association is paying about $400 a month in electricity for the existing lamp posts and I'm thinking we could save money once the new lamp posts are paid for. Anyone here had experience with solar lamp posts?

As a trial we installed one on a post a few years ago. It was stolen the first night. If properly secured and mounted to get and store energy I think their time may be coming.

Low power LED lighting might actually cost less in the long run. You'll still need electricity, but potentially a lot less, and no batteries required.

That is what I did with all the many high voltage can lights had in my new home ... If your local government allows I would change to LED lighting which will greatly reduce costs. Try that out for a few years and maybe in future solar will become more affordable when you need to replace or upgrade in the future.

We contacted a number looking to light our neighborhood with solar. By the time we purchased them and had them mounted on concrete slabs installed, the total averaged $10,000 per light. We could not justify this expense.

Our HOA installed 1 solar streetlight because the cost of running electric to the site was cost prohibitive. The light does a good job. As for the other street light, the BOD switched out the old halogen yellow lights which were too dim with LED's. The BOD did report a savings on electric cost.
