Has anyone had to censure a board member? What is the proper way to do it?

Info on censure can be found on the following page from davis-stirling website:

If you would answer, what is it you hope to gain by censuring someone?

I hope to put a stop to behaviors that are dividing the community with the personal opinions of unproductive board members.

I don't know if that will really do anything. Censures are more effective in a professional or political setting. People take HOAs too personal.

I'd think a censure will just piss em off. I vote for a special meeting to kick em to the curb (remove them from the board and any office they hold).

I'm not a big fan of half measures.

I agree with Mark.
I don't thing a censure will obtain your goal and will likely make matters worse.

Removing them from Office (vs. removing them from the Board) won't stop the behavior either but may minimize the damage being done from that Officer position.

Removing them from the Board will likely (based on what you have provided in other posts) make the matter worse as well (as some people simply can't let anything go and, over time, will become worse).

The best way is to simply have a heart to heart conversation with them.
However, if they are not receptive to such a conversation (or you aren't ready to really reconcile), then the attempt may also make matters worse.

I am not a big fan of trying to control the behavior of another person. In a nutshell, all individuals have the right to express an opinion (regardless of how stupid and obstructive we think it is...lol..).

However, you do have the right to lobby for removal of a Board member. Good luck and let us know it goes for you.

Unfortunately valid points made.. It will probably make things worse considering who it is. They were actually a decent neighbor until the officer Vote didn't go his way. Since then, he's become the neighbor from hell.. I really don't understand why a grown man is acting this way. With any luck, he won't be voted back in come June.

If i were in your shoes, i would count my blessings, put a positive slant on things and take this opportunity to read books and other resource materials which are available about how to deal with difficult people. Amazon has some great books on this subject. This may be your best opportunity to learn some new skills and become prepared for most anything which comes your way. Good luck and keep us posted on how this is going for you!

Try having the Board give him a project, perhaps doing the Reserve Study.
This is something that takes time, is important for years to come and affects the budget.
Explain that you believe he would be the best to work on this.

Then see if he comes through.

Good idea. But we've never done one. What would I have to compare it to?

If you have never done one, then it's all the more reason to get one done.
