Does anyone here have experience with the hatchet jobs done by Asplundh or any other contractors hired by the power utility trimming trees around power lines? I cannot believe what they did to the trees here and I swear they were just here a couple of months ago. They are not going to be happy until the trees are dead.

You can avoid this problem by removing the trees growing under (or too close to) the power lines. If you gotta have trees, plant species that do not grow tall enough to interfere with the power lines.

I cannot go back in time and undo what the developer did 16 years ago. I need some info from folks who may have had experience in this area.

Allison,

Please reread the posting rules

Companies who trim around power lines do just that, trim around power lines.
They are not hired to prune your tree. They are hired to remove limbs that may cause power outages in a storm.

If you do not like how the tree looks after the job, you should hire a company to prune the tree to look aesthetically pleasing or to remove the tree completely.

To prevent this in the future, prune the tree away from the power lines or remove the tree completely.

Here is some info I found on the internet:

You should consider hiring a tree trimming company that is arbor certified and receives training or is recommended
by the Arbor Society or local Arbor board.

I guess I missed that passage of the Constitution that says something to the effect that a person who purchases real estate is bound for all times under penalty of death to perpetuate the mistakes of a developer.

Power lines normally run in an easement, with power company being the dominant estate. As such, the power company (and their contractors) may remove anything from the easement that interferes with their use of the easement. The aesthetics of the trees that encroach on the easement are of no concern to the power company.

Your developer made a mistake in planting trees in or near the easement. (Many people are surprised to find that trees and other plants grow.) Your remedies include living with the problem, replacing the offending trees with a species that will not grow tall enough to interfere with the power lines, or plant similar trees away from the power lines.

Keep in mind that due to the ration of absolute entitled and unrealistic nonsense that power companies get when we lose power is in direct relation to how they will trim anyone's trees and I don't blame them in the least. The entitlement that most Americans feel they are owed is sick.

As posted, the real question is why are you waiting for the power company to do your job? You should thank the power company for saving your money since they've already "trimmed" your tree and it won't be as costly to have them removed completely.
