Interesting article on the homepage of HOA Talk regarding a recall in CA of rather large HOA (well over 1200 homes).

Generally, when a Board is accused of being not transparent, some of the blame will rest on the management company in this case. I find it rather ironic that the reporter was interviewing the owner of the management company.

Wonder when that contract will be terminated.

I brought it up for two points.

1) That recall was difficult due to thew sheer numbers they had to overcome, but it only proves, with effort, nothing is impossible.
2) Payback is, well, I'll let you fill in the rest.

Larry, you're right, their days are numbered. I am sure proper notice will be given to the members and Friday will be the reckoning day.

I read the article and notice the property manager did preface his comments with saying he couldn't speak to the issues concerning that particular HOA. He didn't say anything particularly wrong, but it would have been more appropriate to refuse comment and refer any questions to the new board. It's also possible the property manager consulted with the new board first before saying anything.

If this board keeps the property manager, this would be a good time to remind everyone of where various boundaries are, especially if there's a chance this company will get the heave ho before Christmas.

As for the recall itself, I hope things work out for this HOA and commend the homeowners who did the hard work in pushing for a vote. People often come on this board with legitimate issues about their boards, but seem to hesitate when told they need to rally their fellow homeowners to make changes. Nothing happens by just sitting there fuming and wishing things will change - sometimes, the change won't happen unless and until YOU get up and get going.

How many times do you see something you had been involved in make "national" news (well maybe just a national discussion board).

Back in March 2015, while working for another company, I prepared the documents that outlined the procedure for doing a recall and putting a slant of candidates together to take back their HOA. Because of the size of the community, I wasn't sure that they could do it. I had completely forgot about it until I saw it yesterday.

I joined this site back in 2009 because of the very things this HOA was going through. Guess who the manager was?

In light of that, Richard, I think you're right in saying the guy needs to go. It's true that ultimately the Board oversees the property manager, which is why THEY need to make sure they have their own act together. If things have escalated to a recall, people almost always kick out the property manager along with the board because folks usually look to the biggest target and blame it for everything.

I understand property managers want to keep the business of a very large HOA, but if that board doesn't act in an ethical manner or are just plain incompetent (and downright criminal), no point in going down with the ship - drop them and run for the nearest lifeboat! It's not about dictating to the board, but the property manager should make it clear that he/she cannot do his/her job effectively if the board doesn't act in a transparent manner - otherwise you've giving indirect approval to foolishness.
