Don't want to drag this one out, as my prior post a few weeks ago really covered alot on this issue, but ....

Just want to clarify something on 2 links provided to me from FHA:

The first link from FHA states "Housing providers may ask individuals who have disabilities that are not readily apparent or known to the provider to submit reliable documentation of a disability and their disability-related need for an assistance animal."

Another link from FHA states "One may not be asked or required to provide proof of training or certification for such animals in housing."

So, if I'm reading this correctly, we can ask a person what their disability is (if it's not readily apparent), but we can't ask for proof that the dog is a service animal?

This is really complicated!!!! (we're not dealing with a service animal, but a "therapy" dog, although the homeowner is having trouble deciding what to call it). :-)

Linda,

Many people consider them (service v. therapy) the same (even though we all know that they are not).

My suggestion, quit over thinking the issue.

Simply ask for a note from the Dr. and the Drs contact info as authorized by the FHA.
That will likely resolve the issue one way or the other.
