We just had a new vinyl fence installed for all 6 condos in our small complex. I want to paint a faux wood finish on this new vinyl fence, but only on our INTERIOR patio walls, which are only visible to us from within our condo.

An HOA board member informed us we are not allowed to paint the interior of the fence, even though it is only visible from inside our condo and is NOT visible from outside our patio.

There is no mention of this restriction in our HOA covenants. Has anyone come across this issue before?

Margo,

Who paid for the fence, you or the Association?

If it was the Association, then it's their fence and not your fence (even though it may fence in your property)

Hi Tim,

Thank you for your reply. The fence was indeed paid for out of our HOA funds, which all 6 owners pay into. Therefore, I am now understanding that we cannot paint any part or side of the fence without a board vote. Hard to believe! Oh well...

Thanks again,

Margo

Sometimes there are rules in place that also helps you. One day your going to sell this home. Which means even though you may like this wood grain look, the potential buyer may not. You sometimes have to think of your future sales potential versus tastes. Painting won't add value to your home as much as maybe interest or disgust. I once turned down a home because I hated the wall paper.

So not against this idea, but also realize that it may not be doing you and your neighbors any favors either.

Hi Melissa,

Thank you for your educated and experienced opinion. The association is warming up to my suggestion that I will return the fence to it's original state, if and/or when we ever decide to sell. I am researching the fabulous vinyl paint options we have these days to ensure it is possible.

Thanks again,

Margo

vinyl is maintenance free

except for occasional rinsing

? do you really WANT to paint a fence every 7-10 years ?

unless, of course, you are related to Tom Sawyer

Tom Sawyer was our approved trim color... LOL!!!! It was called "Sawyer's Fence" and was an off-white... Thanks for reminding me...
