Our board is elected by the members. After you are a board member, the members vote for the officer position amongst themselves. That is when one can ask to be nominated for an office position and even vote for themselves... You do not think Presidential candidates cast their votes to anyone else?

Yes.

Just as every candidate for political office likely votes for themselves.

With others; yes you can vote for yourself. You also can nominate yourself or make a second for officer positions.

Why do you think it's improper for them to vote for themselves?

Well, not bias, as nobody is being treated unfairly, but perhaps a conflict of interest (which I think may be a stretch).

This question reminds me of Puntney Swope, an obscure movie from about 1970. The movie began with a board meeting at an advertising agency during which the then-chairman of the board died of a heart attack. The rest of the directors then decide that the most important thing to do was to immediately elect a new chairman. Each director felt he should be chairman but each felt that it would be wrong to vote for himself. Puntney Swope, the lowly musical director, was elected unanimously as each other director voted for the person least likely to be his challenger. Unlike the other directors, Swope had voted for himself.
