I keep reading that California and Florida mandate that HOA Board members are required to be trained and certified to serve. Is this true? I can't even get an answer from an attorney. No one seems to know. Whenever I google it the site states this is true, but when I click on they talk about Florida only.

There is no requirement in CA for directors to have any kind of training or education.

If you want to know more about CA HOA laws, a HOA law firm has a great website. Go to davis-stirling.com and scroll thru their Main Index.

Thanks KerryL1, I have practically read the Davis-Stirling Act in it's entirety over the last couple of years and also on California Code site and couldn't find any info on this issue. I spoke to CAI and they had never heard that question and I spoke to an HOA attorney and he couldn't tell me. Thanks for your answering in a timely manner.

In Florida a director has to certify in writing that he or she has read the governing documents, will work to uphold them, and faithfully carry out their fiduciary duty. In lieu of the above a director may submit a certificate that shows he or she completed an approved "educational curriculum". Most property management companies and some law firms run the classes. It's technically not "training", but most people do call it that. The curriculum I attended was a half-day session. There was no test at the end

Right, Joyce, if there WERE a statute requiring such education, it'd be in the Davis Stirling Act.

Yes GenoS, I read that and when I googled the question it came up Florida and California and in the body of the text only spoke about Florida. Thanks
