Hello,

I wanted to get some opinions on something. I currently serve as the Master HOA President for our Community (267 homes). For some reason, there is an HOA Board for 1 of our 3 subdivisions which covers some specific subdivision contracts (116 homes). The Master Board has made great strides and has taken a professional approach to everything since new leaders came into office. The other HOA Board is running things "out of a cigar box" so to speak which concerns me as a resident of this subdivision as it pertains to managing our finances.

What are your thoughts on if I were to seek election, most likely looking at President, of the smaller subdivision Board? I understand the perceived conflict of interest but there are no material cost sharing, contracts, etc as the Master and Sub HOA are set in different accounting silos at our management company.

Thanks for any input as I mull over next steps.

Mike

It's not uncommon for the board of the Master to be made up of board members/officers of the member associations.

Mike,

I am not familiar with master associations but I have heard of at least one where the board of the master is comprised of board members from the sub associations. There would seem to be no outright conflict of interest although it is easy to see that one could arise.

Look at it this way: If you are already on one board and the members vote you onto the other board then they must be OK with the arrangement.

My experience is the Master BOD consists of the Presidents of the Sub-associations and the Master BOD then elects its officer from among the Master BOD Members. Thus one could be President of their HOA and President of the Master but it would have occurred in that order.

Our Master Association is just underway. There are three associations in the Master. Five seats total. Two associations have two seats on the Master. My association (condos) has one seat. One of our board members will be on the Master board. It's not a conflict of interest to knowledgeably and honorably represent your community as part of the whole.
