Can anyone tell me just how involved a previous Board has to be durring a transition? Do they file a state report with the new Officers? Do they change bank account info.and order new checks with us? We thought we would do that on our own but the previous President says we should all do that together, old and new.I was VP,and was just elected President. The treasurer has never kept books, and I'm the only one on the board who has never seen our finances. What is the new board obligated to do? Patty

Patty, once there is a turnover it is the new Board's responsibility except in cases of fraud or other wrongdoing. It is beneficial to transition from the old Board to the new Board. Particularly, for a financial review or audit and for setting up signature cards at the bank. Since you were already on the Board there should not a need to transition regarding contracts and current or past activities.

Patty you need policies in place that dictate all of that. If members of the old board have signature authority then they need to contact the bank and get new Signature cards filled out so that the new officers are the only ones with access. If the members of the old board had things sent to their address then they will need to have that changed as well. If members of the old board have records or documents that belong to the Association, they need to provide it to the new board. Because some of this requires physical signatures it is a process not an instant switching of the board and should be done in a professional manner that has already been outlined. The process needs to specify timeframes as well as what is expected of everyone so that there are no hard feels and people can't drag their feet just to spite the new board.
