We have a "NO SMOKING" policy and signs posted. One person insist on "vaping" with a cigar flavor smoke. Members want it to stop. How should we proceed?

Seems that you should include "This includes E-Cigs and Vaping" on your No Smoking sign.

Yeah that is a tricky thing now a days. Had some co-workers who would do that in the office. However, they have now rules banning them inside. So I would modify your rules to include the electronic cigarettes... Laws are changing to include them too in smoking bans.

I would allow it. It's not "smoking" if nothing is lit or burning.

In Florida vaping is being banned in restaurants and public buildings in many counties. I think soon it will be treated the same as regular cigarettes all over the state. It is just as offensive as a regular cigarette and should not be allowed. Smoking is smoking; no cigarettes, cigars, pipes, joints, blunts, crack pipes, e-cigarettes or vaping. If you can smoke it, you cannot use it.

In accordance with your governing documents, amend the existing resolution that created the no smoking rule to include electric devices.

Publish said rules to the membership.

Purchase and place appropriate signage at the pool.

I know it's being banned and I disagree with that, too. How is it just as offensive as regular cigarette smoke? From what I've heard (and smelled) it doesn't smell anywhere near as bad as tar-laden cigarette smoke. In fact, I think it smells kind of pleasant.

Does anyone know if there are any toxins released into the air? Adding fragrances is easy - but what about second hand vape?

Studies conflict (imagine that). Keep in mind that the results of the study belong to those who funded the study. Therefore, if the study is contrary to the desired result the funder wanted, the study may not be released (as was the case with tobacco company research).

Quote from the E-Cigarettes 101 from WebMD that Tim cited:

How E-Cigarettes Work
They look like the real thing. The end glows as you inhale. As you exhale, you puff out a cloud of what looks like smoke. It's vapor, similar to the fog you might see at rock shows, says M. Brad Drummond, MD. He's an assistant professor of medicine at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

All e-cigarettes work basically the same way. Inside, there's a battery, a heating element, and a cartridge that holds nicotine and other liquids and flavorings.

Yeah I am thinking more like what happens if one falls into a pool? Do you have to shock the pool? It has a battery in it. Which could cause corrosion if dropped and lost. Just like we ban glass at a pool, e cigs are pollutants be it air or physical...

If your child is inhaling someone else's vapor, they are too damn close to the person and need to give them some space.

What comes out of a vape pen depends upon what goes in. Did you know you can put marijuana in a vape pen? The e-cigs were supposed to wean people off of smoking, so it has varying levels of nicotine depending on what stage the person is in in their weaning program. Do you know what the person is putting in the thing they are smoking? But this info does not matter because they have a no smoking rule. Does it say specifically what you cannot smoke? If it does not say specifically then I would say the rule encompasses anything that can be smoked.

Keep in mind that the question was not "are e-cigarettes harmful?"

The question was how to we change our documents to prevent the use of e-cigarettes at the pool, as the majority does not want them there?"

I think it would be relatively simple to effect a rather brief policy change and publicity outreach that says , in effect, "Please note that the policy for E-Cigarettes is the same as for regular tobacco products. We urge you to familiarize yourself with the policy." and "This reflects and supports local civic policy." It would be best to sidestep the whole discussion of whether e-cigs and regular tobacco are somehow different. Unless somebody really feels strongly that the distinction is important. I kind of doubt that.
