I was under the understanding that board members was a volunteer position.. Am I wrong?

Most of the time, you are correct, it is a volunteer position. Check your documents and state laws for your particular situation.

However, board members are entitled to reimbursement of reasonable expenses incurred on behalf of the association. This could include such things as mileage, postage, envelopes, copying costs, etc.; however, they should submit a written record (mileage record, receipt) and then payment should be authorized by another board member who is not related to the one seeking reimbursement.

Norman, it depends on the type of corporation you have. If it is like most and a Non-Profit Organization then the board members are not permitted to be reimbursed for their time.
