This weekend I went swimming in a local water park. The next day, I got extremely ill. I thought it was E-coli and it would run it's course. That's usually 48 hours with lots of runs to the bathroom! Unfornately, you shouldn't take any anti-diarhea medicine during this period of time so that you can rid your body of the infection faster. However, my symptoms lasted much longer than the 2 days. It included much more vomitting, stomach cramps, and lots of diarhea. (no fever). Food poisoning felt better!
What I had gotten was something called : Cryptosporidium parvum or "Crypto". It's a parasite. This parasite can be found in public pools, rivers, and some water supplies. This parasite can survive in CHLORINATED WATER for several days. Special filters rated for "Cyst" filtration have to be purchased to prevent it in drinking supply water. It's not always treated for in water treatment plants.
After catching this illness, I felt it important to warn other people about this parasite. It is summer for many of us and time for the pool. Preventing illnesses in our HOA pool's is important. It's something many HOA's overlook.
I suggest reviewing with your pool caretakers what measures they take to prevent water-caused illnesses. What is the procedure to shut-down the pool if a child doesn't wear diapers to the pool? (We shut down 24 hours and shock the pool). What chemicals do they use? Do those chemicals help prevent which illnesses?
I hope I can help someone to prevent them from getting ill. I promise that if you ever get "Crypto", you will NEVER wish it on anyone! It's terrible and extremely painful. I am getting better but still have stomach cramps.

Hi Melissa:

Sorry to hear of your illness! I'm wondering if the contamination of the water park was due to bad water, or someone else who was infected, swimming in the pool? Be sure to let them know about the problem.
