From time to time questions have arisen on this forum regarding average water use. I myself had the same question once several years ago in contemplation of building a home on my property in northern Arizona. That is, how much water do people use per month?

Even though that is a fairly simple question I recall finding a couple of municipal websites, one in Florida and the other in the San Diego area, where each claimed that the average residential customer was using over 35,000 gallons per month. That seemed a bit much and probably resulted from watering the landscape. At the time my wife and I were living in places where the water was paid for an entire complex so we could not make a reliable measurement of our own usage.

Since we bought our current home four years ago we are once again able to see just how much water we use and in our case it works out to about 50 gallons a day per person. I have found other sources that put the number a bit higher at 80-to-100 gallons per day per person.

In our case it is just my wife and myself. We water plants outside very sparingly, maybe ten gallons a week. Our washing machine is one of those high-efficiency front-loaders and it probably uses less than ten gallons per load. Our dishwasher also uses no more than ten gallons per load. We do not have a swimming pool. The toilets are 1970's-era water wasters but we do have a low-flow shower head. We make no special effort to conserve water and our usage is probably fairly typical for people who do not water their lawns or wash their cars.

Hopefully someone can make use of this information.

80 Townhouses. Around 150 residents.
Aggressive water conservation measures adopted. (Toilets now 65% watersense label. Showerheads 75% watersense. Aerators 90% watersense.)
Used 3.4 million gallons of water in 2014 - Down 1.1 million gallons from 2012.
Current usage works out to around 62 gallons per person per day.

Husband and I average 35 gallons each per day.. We have water saver appliances and toilets. We do not water our lawn or wash our cars at home. I recently power washed our siding and deck but that is a once a year chore. And yes we do shower daily. Lol

Based on the average you provided, it would cost our residents on a monthly basis $348.82 for both water and sewer.

Last month the average customer use was 12,226 gallons and that also consists of all the common area water.

In 2011 our association installed SMART controllers for the common area irrigation and it has saved us $200K in the first two years.

When I first moved in my water bill was 9600 gallons which is high for us. So I used a dye tablet and it showed my toilets were leaking. I fixed it with new flapper kits and now its usually around 3000 gallons month (100 day) which is about $10 month.

Several years back I tracked our water usage from July to October.

2 Adults, 3-4 loads of laundry per week, and a lawn sprinkler system on for 32 minutes (4 zones, 8 minutes per zone) two days a week.

We averaged 161 gallons per day or 4,800 gallons per month. During the winter with no sprinklers on and less laundry we were averaging about 3,800 per month or 126 gallons per day.
