We currently have a walking path with 14 lamp posts that are powered by always-on natural gas. We want to move to solar lighting, but are worried about vandalism. Ideas?

There are many options for solar lighting that do not include the small path lights that you just stick in the ground, which I am assuming you are worried about being stolen. Do a google search and you will find lots of options. Even large street lamps that typically the power company owns can be converted to solar. That being said, have you had a problem with vandalism in the past? Is this path in an area near public access or are you worried about homeowners taking them?

As far north as you are, there may be issues in using solar power during the winter months. Check with someone that is actually using similar lights in your area to be sure.

You may want to consider long term costs (which include maintenance) between your current lights, solar lights and typical electrical street lights.

A word of warning... If you are to purchase solar lamps... Make sure they are METAL. The reason being is that for some reason in my yard ALL of my solar path lights have been gnawed to pieces/stumps. They are the plastic kind. Not sure which animal is eating them but within days they are eaten down to the light.

I would also be concerned about the bulb brightness as well. Had a few owners replace outdoor lights and nearly blind a few people with their 100 watt selection...
