Today's story in the HOA news section makes me wonder why we mail our ballots to the management company, out of sight of our election monitors.

Witness describes payoffs, rigging elections in HOA fraud trial
(excerpt)
Earlier Monday, Benzer’s former girlfriend and employee, Marcella Triana, testified that she helped stuff ballots at Park Avenue. She recalled how she was among a “bunch of people” who dropped off fake ballots at Platinum Community Services, the HOA’s community management firm, which was in cahoots with Benzer.

This entire Las Vegas HOA mess is crazy. 2 people involved have committed suicide and several more have gone to jail. It truly gives HOAs, property managers and builders a bad name. In this case, that rep is deserved. I wonder what else will come out about this fiasco.

Cheaters cheat. Show a "cheater" any set of rules/laws/procedures, etc. and they will find a way to cheat. FL and CA try to tightly control owner associations and even then, cheates can cheat. Double signed, signed in blood, wax sealed, etc. ballots just make it harder to cheat.

One thing the NV trial is showing is the more absentee owners there are, the easier it is to chaet.

Stuffing the ballot box is made all that much easier when you have secret ballots.

In my association, votes are allocated by how much real estate you own. When the ballots are printed, each owner gets one that identifies him and how many votes he may cast. To vote, he must sign the ballot and return it either by mail or at the annual meeting. His name and signature remain with his vote so that slipping additional votes into ballot box is impossible.
