Should the HOA distribute security codes BEFORE making the changes to building security?

I have been locked out of my home by my HOA when they make periodic changes to the building security and either leave instruction under my door while I am at work or email after the change has been applied. (They do email the same day, but I do not check email daily which is not a requirement for purchase in the community.)

The Documents of Condominium and building bylaws were filed years before the community installed gates, so there are no requirements on this issue. If anything I see that it may fall into the category of "closing a common area" which requires 7 day advance notice unless closure is due to an emergency but I can see where this is likely not the case as the common area is not actually closed, it's just not accessible.

Most residents drive to and from the building and use a garage door opener which is not usually changed, but the door codes are changed "as needed" which means there is no actual schedule. I walk to and from the building most days so I am in an unusual minority in this case and therefore I have little to no voice in the matter and my requests for advance notice have fallen on deaf ears.

Are there any "customary standards" or even requirements that might pertain that would be appropriate to request?

Thank you in advance.

Should they, perhaps. In your case it would certainly be helpful.

Are the required to, probably not.

My suggestion is to explain the issue and ask that they send out the e-mail notice 24 hours in advance.

I am sorry for your inconvenience but there is a security issue here. How does you HOA know your not going to give that security code out to the person or person's that is leaving causing the change? That would defeat the purpose of changing the code if they gave it our PRIOR to making the change.

One company I worked for, if an employee left they changed the lock code to the doors. So upon them being escorted out they could not enter back in. A security measure greatly appreciated in today's world of angry ex-co-workers seeking revenge. The company also announces when the person leaves so that no one will let them "piggy back" into the place.

It was inconvenient to me as well as I worked an "off shift". They did most of the letting goes on dayshift. So I'd find myself often left out on days as no access to my work email and they don't send the message to your personal email.

We had a phone number instead assigned to call. Which is maybe something they should have available. Someone on-call to give out the new code for those who find themselves out in the cold. It's an inconvenience yes. However, the purpose of the inconvenience I can live with....
