(1) Post any relevant topic you like, but please keep it clean, helpful, positive and friendly.

These seem like very good goals.. But is it okay if things sometimes stray a little, without starting a new thread every time and a little humor is added here and there? or is it always to be very formal and business like?

While sometimes things have gotten carried away, even before I first posted I think I learned a lot from some posts and threads that strayed a bit. Sometimes I gained unexpected knowledge on a different issue.

Just like at a meeting among neighbors, friends or family. I thought most forums were sort of informal. Maybe a little break here and there for fun so they are not so stuffy and boring.

I do agree that they should not stray so much that the original OP with a real problem is ignored, that would be rude and unfair to them.

I think all these different personalities and styles we find here is sort of good practice for being part of a HOA (whatever your status). Practice with patience, tolerance, having an open mind and feeling good about helping or even just supporting someone else.

We are all different, no one perfect,(especially me). I still have much to learn and I'm sure this will be pointed out from time to time, so I will apologize ahead of time.

**Kerry are their any other rules about threads that aren't listed under the posting rules? I have read them all now....lol. And are you a moderator for HOA talk? (and I am sorry, I know I've been one to annoy you, I won't talk to JohnC about neighborhoods in our town again.)

Emma,

For the most part, this forum is self moderated. When necessary the Moderators will step in, either on their own or after someone contacts them.

It is good to keep topics separated as much as possible, as this helps those who may be searching the site for specific issues. As I said in a different thread, tangents happen.

I once brought this issue up years ago and was told that sometimes you simply have to muddy the waters to achieve the desired outcome.

I'll look for that thread and post a link to it if I can find it.

I found it. See: Subject: Do we muddy the waters with our discussions? from 2009.

I think the following is the most important part of the thread I linked to. From RobertR1:

I think on this site, some value is obtained from muddying the waters. I don't think it is deliberate but it just seems to have some unexpected results. In part maybe because our purpose is not to prove right and wrong but to voice opinions and the posters (all that read) can qualify their decision, apply the good and throw out the bad. Many of our threads results in meandering discussion about issues far off the original post, but normally, someone will think to go back and read the question and address it. I can understand how an orderly person might find this all crazy, but here, it seems to have some benefits. Just as personal face to face conversations reaches way beyond subjects, so do we.
