We have a pool that has no life gaurd, after pool hours should pool lights stay on? I am speaking of the actual pool water lights.

Ours are on a timer-switch. If someone is there they can turn them on but the lights will turn off after awhile. This way we do not pay to have them on all night (or they are not on if someone doesn't want them on). We do have two dusk/dark sensor lights that come on to light the pool area for safety reasons and to help reduce vandalism.

We had our pool lights on a timer too. It was on a "Sun-sensor". Which meant when the sun went down, about 4 hours later the lights went out. That's about 10 PM closing time anyways. Maybe later on summer days which people stay later anyways.
I would try to put a timer on for the appropriate times that your area may need. Leaving lights on all night can cause algea to form. Timer's aren't that expensive. I even put one on the water hose that fills the pool! Our pool lady often forgot to come back to turn it off and kids would turn it on.

Our local health department, and Police force asked that we have the lights on whenever it is dark. This aids them in spotting a floater during their visits.

Check with your local health department, Code enforcement, police, etc. We are required to keep our pool and spa lights on during all hours of darkness.

Hate to be one adding another level of scrutiny to solving this issue... but, check with your insurance carrier too. There could well be liability issues with the lights being off, on a timer, etc. I know that most of the responses here might seem like "overkill" but they are part of the "experience" that many here have the wealth (and sometimes headache) of having endured.
