Our homeowners association owns an old quonset hut. Currently our Board of directors uses it to store their personal property such as trailers; lawn mowers, and an RV. They claim they are in charge of the building and will allow others to use it until the space if full. However, they get permanent storage of their goods and refuse to give keys to anyone not on the board of directors. A homeowner is arguing that if it is a community-owned building everyone should have access to it. He says it is a law that everyone have equal access to the community building. Is this true? We live in Oklahoma.

Ah, the old its a law argument. Whenever someone tells me that it's a law, I tell them that I was not aware of that, please show me it so I can learn. The Board can set reasonable rules for the community building as long as they are fairly administered.

What do you written rules and other documents say about "common areas"? I cannot believe they state that such ia common area or common element is only for the use of board of director members! Do some homework, Phil.

This is what you need to find out.

"Quonset hut" sounds like a shed erected to hold lawn maintenance equipment, etc. I can easily imagine such a thing was not intended for use by the residents. It may be that even the present use is unwise on a number of grounds.
