I am at the point that I am considering changing my screen name as it is to close to the other John from SC.

Good or bad idea?

Thanks

If you do change it, at least it will be for a good reason.
There are a few on here who I know and a few other I believe have (had) multiple screen names.

I'm honestly not sure why they have chosen to do this.
It simply makes no sense to me.

It may make sense if you failed to make a note of your login ID on this site. This site places cookies in your browser so you do not have to login each time, but if those cookies get deleted for any reason you need to know the user name and password. The administrators are not terribly responsive to requests for forgotten passwords, leaving one with little choice but to re-register with another name. The admins do send out emails from time to time with the full login info so that one can log in using either ID. Uh, so I have heard.

There are those out there, of course, who just love to argue with themselves.

Well in my case I'm also known as GlenL but my computer crashed and I can't for the life of me remember my password and the email the admin sends it to is the same story but I could access my son's old account. He had a whopping three entries or so but I'm stuck with it until I can recover my old data.

So why did you change the State from Ohio to Indiana?

Aside from being confused with another poster as in your case, what difference does a name make?

This is an anonymous forum.

Then there are those that think a 'post count' means something.

I don't believe it is needed. People know who is who.

JohnC,

We know you as JohnC – so why confuse us?

It took me all of perhaps a few days, way back when I first started reading, joined, to realize that are two “Johns” from South Carolina posting. Should, if, a “new member” joining appear to be confused – do as you do on occasion - just “point it out”.

So, from my perspective, to answer to your question – bad idea.

So why did you change the State from Ohio to Indiana?

Well because he was 28 and lived in Indiana when he registered. I live in the Greater Cincinnati area which I-275 encircles and passes through OH, IN & KY. He then moved to TN and eventually to CA without changing his profile. Three slaps of a wet noodle the next time I see him.

Glen/Jack,

Thanks for clarifying.

Lets summarize:

Reasons given for changing screen names:

1) Lost password and had to re-register
2) Confusion over who is who (as for JohnB and JohnC)
3) Concerns over anonymity (you want to speak your mind but not have people know who you are)
4) You simply like to argue with yourself

I certainly understand the first two reasons. I personally don't agree with the third (mainly because I was taught that if you won't say something to someone's face, then you shouldn't say it behind their back, and I sort of see the anonymity issue that way). Additionally, if you register with a fictitious name initially, you have established anonymity. I think, at least from my perspective, the fourth reason, although comical stated that way, can be an indication of a troll.

As for the reason of the thread - John, I think that there is enough difference in the writing styles between you and JohnB that the regular readers can tell who is who.

Tim years ago we had someone from CA (at least that's what the screen said) who would ask a question, get shot down, and repost as a new entity asking the same basic question but worded differently in the hopes of getting someone to agree with her. She burned through five or six identities before she figured out that no matter how she asked it, no one thought she was in the right.

My laptop is broken. My other devices sometimes were automatically defaulted to my screen name. However, on a few occassions I have lost my login information. Had login all over again but would not work. Very frustrating. So I did make a backup ID that works just in case. So some have caught on to it preety quickly.

I used to get confusec between the two johns. Now I am used to it. I just double check and know which one gives good advice. Lol!

Ya need to forgive my typing now. I am limited to a tablet and have tendonotis in a wrist. Forced to wear a solid wrist brace to my elbow. So hoping I do not lose my info on this device.

No, not pita.

Sometimes I see a shoot from the hip, knee-jerk reaction initial post. This is more often than not followed up with well thought out and informative post that is very helpful.
