Just wondering what funds should be allocated to a Social Committee?? Our Social Committee feels the HOA should be footing the bill for the entertainment of some not all memebers. My feeling has always been that HOA dues should be used to maintain the properties first. "Parties" should be arranged at an additional cost to the Home Owner - $25-50/head. What are some of your thoughts out there.

RoseC, minor expenses to promote participation and getting to know your neighbors are done by some HOAs. Things like coffee and cookies at the annual meeting, Easter egg hunt, Christmas sleigh ride, 4th of July community picnic supplies, etc. And then there are some Boards who spend thousands of dollars, include alcohol, and are not for benefit the general membership. If those are what you are refering to I definitely agree that these are not reasonable association expenses.

What is considered a reasonable expense? and based and what assumptions? The event? The association's budget? Our Decs state for the welfare of the community. Case in point. Our Prz likes to see homeowners decorate during the holiday season and seems to think this will promote a neighborly environment. The previous year we had a decorating contest but we had not budgeted for this event--another homeowner stepped up to the plate and offered to hand out first/second/third prizes. To this day none of those three have received their prize but that is another story. This past December the Board adopted this year's budget and included a line item to fund a holiday decorating contest. Nowhere have I found any reference in our governing documents that funds should be utilized for something like this and have brought it to their attention and their response was pretty much "so what are you going to do about it?" and pretty much I basically have no right for/against what the Board decides to use our money on. And yet I am constantly reminded that it is solely up to the Board's interpretation of what they can do. -ReneeD

We host an annual dinner/dance that is self supporting, then we host two block parties at no cost to the HOA. The block parties open us up to liability but we choose to accept this. What we (I started this) denied was funding an association backed garage sale. The liability was a huge concern and we refused to support that with funds or insurance. It was still held but not as a supported HOA function.

Ken...just curious what liability you refer to for an association garage sale?

Our association is sponsoring one due to overwhelming request. We are single family homes. The HOA is providing the ads, the banners, balloons, and a directory of participants with a map for 'buyers'.

our hoa is now charging us $200-$700 ayear to use the same christmas decorations we have used for 10 years...which used t be provided by volenteers and free. Now this board is charging $1000 for "meetings." I have gone to the meetings..they will have wine or horduerves!!!!We are also providing hotdogs and beverages at the annual meeting. I said dues are for repairs and bills PERIOD.
