We had a HOA meeting today about gate codes. The board doesn't want to give out codes because it spreads like fire. BOD are concerned about security and privacy that's why. One homeowner has a lot of people living in her house but doesn't want to buy more remotes than she was given.....went around the neighborhood campaigning for people to support her demands for gate codes.

The residents are not being denied access because they can use remotes, buzzed visitors in by house phones or cell phones. We consulted with our gate guy and will add both house and cell phone numbers as the contact numbers; that means the residents gets 3 options...remotes, home line, AND cell line.
(Residents can let themselves in using their cell phones if the remote fails). That satisfies everyone there. We were surprised to see most people supported the board's decision to not give out the codes after we tell them about the pros and cons. Everyone except the woman and the renters she got on her side.

They verbally attacked the President and wanted him off the board. He's been on the board since the place was first built in 2000 and had contributed so much. He genuinely cares about the community unlike so many who only complains but never step up. The problem is he can't keep calm when under attack. He's stepping down after this incident. We really need him though, he's the most helpful member. He feels very sad, so does the board. HOA management said we're one of the good boards that they've helped managed. Such a thankless job.

Sam,

The individual serving as the President of the Association is effectively seen as the face and voice of the Association. My suggestion would be to ask that the individual stay on but in a different position, say VP. As VP or a Director not filling an Officer position, he is less likely to be attacked as it will be the President who runs the meetings and addresses the membership.

I'm surprised that you had renters at the meeting. It's nice that your Association allows it but as a renter, they technically have no standing to address the Board or vote unless they hold the member's (landlord) proxy.

Glad everything seems to have worked out best for the Association. Yes, you may have to deal with what we call CCO (chief complaining officer) about the issue for awhile. However, you did what was best for the Association.

Yes, I realize the mistake with the renters being there. HOA management did point that out, but before they could kick the renters out...the Prez got sucked in when he responded to their attacks. He will serve as (Consultant) because of his 14 years experience, the rest of the board are newbies. Thanks and have a nice day, Tim.
