Our Board, of which I am the secretary, voted not to allow anyone to record our meetings because, "they don't want them misinterpreted". This is in clear violation of the Maryland Sunshine Law. The true reason they do not want things recorded is that they don't want any records. The minutes are a joke. Basically they will only allow things to go on record if everyone approves them... . . What do you suggest I do?

If they are indeed violating Maryland law, threaten to report them to the state attorney general, and then do it if they don't change their tune. State law trumps HOA rules. Always. Harold

The other idea is to resign first.

MkM - IMO, minutes should not be an exact transcription of everything said. Think high level. Tape recordings can assist the minute taker to provide accuracy of what transpired but should be destroyed after the minutes are ratified by the board. Some good websites for minute taking are:

Brad said "The other idea is to resign first." LOL. They would probably remove you as secretary anyway. But I would just resign as secretary and not from the board. They can't remove you from the board, but they can remove you as secretary. They have effectively already done that since they are re-doing your minutes to suit them anyway. Depends on your stress factor.

My concern was that if you were on the board and wrong doing was found that you could be held accountable as well. I was suggesting that he/she distance themselves from the situation.
