I recently moved to Arizona from Arkansas, where I had 3 acres of land, and now I live in a housing tract. I didn't even know what the HOA was until a few days ago. To be honest I thought it was just a joke my neighbors tried pulling on me. I was wondering what animals are allowed, and what animals are not in my housing tract. I'm assuming all housing tracts follow the same guidelines. I know I cannot keep horses, sheep, or cattle here. I know dogs, cats, birds, and common household pets are. However, I know some people who keep pygmy goats, and potbelly pigs, as pets and their HOA doesn't complain. I am really looking into getting a goat, I gave up my herd moving out here. Obviously I do not intend to get another herd, just one. My daughter has been wanting a runner duck too. Both animal species are quiet, and less messier than a dog. Just looking for some input on this. I do not in any way want to offend anyone (:

It is NOT just the HOA restrictrions but city as well. You can find the type of animals allowed in your docs. You may need to ask local animal control the other rules.

Dalaney,

All Assocaitions are different. To find out what your Assocaition permits or prohibits, you need to read all of your governing documents (CC&Rs, Bylaws, Articles of Incorporation, Resolutions). Additionally, as Melissa pointed out, there may be County or City zoning restrictions that may prohibit certain animals.

You should also keep in mind that even if the zoning restrictions allows an animal, your Association might prohibit the animal. You will need to comply with both restrictions. Therefore, in the example I just provided, you would not be allowed to keep the animal.

Best advice, when in doubt - ask your Board of Directors.

You assume wrong. A better guess would be that they are all different.

My association doesn't allow chickens. Probably not other kinds of farm animals either but I particularly remember chickens. Seems sensible because these are townhouses.

I hope we don't get someone moving in who things llamas are OK because they are not specifically mentioned.

1. See if your HOA has a list of banned animals.
2. See if your city has regulations on animals at "your" property. You will have different zoning laws than someone else in town.
