Has anyone in condo complexes(not individual houses) had problems with people leaving bags of garbage outside of their condo doors.... awaiting the morning hours to take it to the garbage bins across from their unit(s)? Leaving garbage outside their door invites varmints to include coyotes that we are particularly wanting to deter in any way possible. I would like to see any articles written about this subject. I have tried the google process but could not find anything. I want to write a flyer on this subject but want the pertinent material to put in that flyer on the dangers of putting garbage out over night and how that invites coyotes and other varmints.

Not only coyotes, but this mess attracts rats, raccoons and other creatures, not to mention flies (maybe not now because of the weather!) It's unattractive, stinky and a health hazard - make sure your flier also says something about proper disposal of garbage (use whatever language your city or county's sanitation department has on the subject).

A few photos of the mess (minus the address numbers) can also drive home the point. Take the photos from the sidewalk or another place where homeowners can't scream about you stepping onto "their property." In fact, if your community has any CCRs or community rules on this stuff, you might want to send a friendly reminder to the homeowner with the photo (they should be time and date stamped), and keep a copy in your files in case you have to issue fines or take other action. Good luck!

Alex,

If this is a new problem, blame it on the severe cold weather. No one wants to put on his parka just to make a trip to the dumpster. In that case, a simple flier may suffice as most of us do not readily equate a sack of garbage with coyotes eating the kids.

Tim - You don't have to go out west for find Coyotes. You can look right here in Fairfax County.

Lately, we have a lot of folks do not store their trash in a covered trash can, so that the possums, raccoon and other rodents dig through the trash. ...and folks are wondering why raccoon are climbing up to their upper level deck and wondering why we are seeing Coyotes in our community (last seen on Darter). We also have had numerous complaints about rats living under lower level decks and in some cases, some were known to have taken up residence under the porch of the home.

Yes Coyotes were not originally indigenous to this area, but their arrival is well documented on Fairfax County's website.

Several of our residents (including myself) have seen the coyotes.

I know. However I did the search using the terms OK Condo Coyotes garbage and what popped up was mainly in the west. I didn't spend a lot of time on the search, perhaps a total of 5 min.

Start with a flyer. If that doesn't work, vote in fines and start issuing warnings and then a fine. Paying a fine usually changes behavior. There is no reason people should be leaving trash bags outside their door. Its just lazy.
