We have a number of garbage bin enclosures in which there are two garbage bins.....one for regular garbage and one for recyclables. There is a side entrance into each garbage enclosure and the top is open.

Problem is that if we keep the garbage bin lids closed(perhaps to reduce odor if there really is any.... and to prevent coyotes, etc from getting into the bins for possible food items)... the residents at the condo will throw their garbage OVER the enclosure wall and it will land on the lid of the garbage bin inside. They (the residents) are just too irresponsible to go thru the side entrance..... raise the lid.....throw the garbage in. I am not even sure if putting up signs would help.

Has anyone ran across this situation?

Our dumpsters have sliding doors on the side, which match up to the side entrances to the pens.

Alex,

I agree with the laziness of your residents, however, they've revealed to you a customer service need that would benefit your community. You need better access for humans and less access for critters.

Well, a few options:

1) Punish the offenders. This would likely require installing security cameras so you have proof.

2) Raise assessments on everyone to pay for a cleaning crew to spend 1 or 2 hrs a day to pick up the garbage an place it in the bin.

3) Threaten number 2 (with likely costs) and see if peer pressure will encourage the offenders to comply.

4) Leave the lids open (as the bags not making it into the bin is defeating the purpose of having the lids closed).

5) Invest in a different type of bin that may be a compromise to the issue. Perhaps your trash service can make recommendations.

I have known of others who have had similar problems.

Sort through the trash and find something that identifies the source. Discarded mail is always a good means of finding out whose garbage it is. Then return the garbage to them. If they are not home, leave it at their door. Once is usually enough to get the message across.
