When our property manager sends an attachment It comes as "winmai" on my computer no matter what format (PDF, jpg) the attachment is in. It gets changed in cyperspace and I can not open the attachment.
I have added Boost Speed to my computer hoping this would solve the problem.
I have tried Zamzar.com to translate. that doesn't even help.
One time I was able to open a winmail, but only one time.
Oh I can open it, it just comes through as squiggly lines and strange marks.

Does anyone know a remedy for this?????

I had already tried to Google it and it did not help. I should have probably mentioned that in my post.

Recently had this exact problem with attachments from our PM's office. I could open these documents Ok when sent from other people. Turns out it was a problem with their software/server setup. They needed tech support to resolve the issue. Don't know what they did but it got fixed.

I had the same exact experience as Jim, Bonnie. Tech support at our MC fixed it somehow. At first, they kept saying it was a problem at my end.

When i had the same problem, Peter, I googled it too. I had a difficult time understanding the topic as I'm not very computer savvy. I was able to grasp that the winmail.dat problem is widespread. One suggestion was that the sender--my PM--had a rich text setting turned on, or some such, that was the cause of my being unable to open the attachments.

Is your annoyance due to this not being an HOA issue?

I'm not annoyed.

I'm amused.

Where do you think RichardP3 'found' the link he posted?

My guess... Google. However, to be fair to him, any search engine would provide the same results.

pps.

for any one sending using OUTLOOK:

How to Configure Outlook NOT to send Winmail.dat attachments

To Turn off Rich Text sending for messages in Microsoft Outlook

1) Click on Tools

2) Click Options, and then click the Mail Format tab.

3) In the Send in this Message Format list, select Plain Text, and then click OK.

This will set your default sending method to Plain Text, which will lose your special formatting options with fonts, colors, etc. However everyone, no matter what email program they are using, will now be able to receive your email with no problems.

You may be able to save the document on your desktop and change the extension to .pdf to open it. Allow it to be opened by adobe. That may help with existing ones.

The issue is definitely with Microsoft Outlook and their default settings. I realistically don't expect Microsoft to address the issue anymore than they already have.

I use Mozilla Thunderbird to read e-mail and have the same issue with anything sent from my church. Even though the issue is the settings within outlook, the church office claims that they have followed the steps others provided and it hasn't helped.

Therefore, I found the following which provides links that allow me to read those documents:

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Winmail.dat_attachments

I used the "lookout extension" (the first option offered under solutions) which allows to read those documents.

Hope this helps,

Tim
