In a condo complex where we have a building with 10 or so condos.... upstairs condo with a balcony and a downstairs condo with a balcony. Has anyone had experience with birds landing on and "pooping" on an upstairs condo railing or flooring? If so, what is a solution to keep the birds away?

I find that #12 bird-shot works well for small birds #9 for larger ones but it can get a bit messy and can play hell with the railings.

Seriously do a net search for: how to deter birds from patio

Lots of solutions out there.

I was recently in the 30th Street Station in Philadelphia. I noticed that inside the SEPTA train canopy every upper surface where a bird could land is covered with some sort of plastic spikes. Not very appealing to look at but it does effectively discourage the birds from roosting. It seems like a better solution than poisoning, shooting, shouting, or scaring them away.

If the nuisance birds are mostly of a particular species, you may be able to find life-sized dummies of whatever bird preys on them. I am not so sure this works but I see many plastic owls on roofs in my area that are intended to scare away the pigeons.

I've heard that pictures of large birds of prey sometimes works. I know MIT had birds of prey painted on the glass windows on an overhead walkway between buildings. Apparently it stopped the smaller birds from flying into the glass and getting hurt.

Garden shops sell a lifelike model of an owl you can attach to your balcony railing. Really works.

Owls are effective, but make sure your documents permit attachments to balcony rails, etc.
