Our clubhouse has been a varied dumping grounds over the last years. Mostly furniture. But we have had books and exercise equipment brought in by various board members.

We had our clubhouse redone over the last 6 ms. I recently found and "donation" of junk kitchenware sitting on the counter in the clubhouse. Including personalized coffeencuos of recent forslosure. Several board members acceptednthe glasses and junk thinking we could use the 20; odd matched glssses~mugs~dishes and chipped acrylic glassware. Inmade the decision to toss and donate back to goodwill.

How do as a community prevent this? Make rules that prevent dumping of unwanted items? I am at a loss as is our other board members as to why this keeps occurring in our clubhouse mostly by the SAME board members. Advice? Rules? Just toss junk? Have a one to one? ;

Michelle,

They're not donating anything to the HOA; they are dumping it because it's "too good to toss yet not good enough to keep at home." It's trash. Toss what the clubhouse doesn't need and then discuss -probably unsuccessfully - the need to stop these "donations." I wouldn't label this gifts as being well-intentioned.

There is a fine line between saying no thank you and offending someone.
I find that it's a slippery slope to start taking "donations" of unwanted goods. As you said next it's someone's furniture, exercise equipment.. books? Who goes to the clubhouse to read??

I'd say NO donations at all. Unless it's approved by the current board. No social committee to drop off junk unannounced or board members etc.

You don't need someone's junk they are TOO LAZY to get rid of.

Friend of mine once said accept anything offered. You can always trash it later.

This story is all to familiar and eerily so!! I found this in our clubhouse just yesterday. and it's a "donation" of crap that someone left us. Being board president I had NO idea what this junk was... turns out several board members knew, no communication to me and they thought we could use 20+ mismatched various wineries glasses and chipped coffee mugs.

Salvation Army got most of this, including some bizarre coffee mugs too. What with someone thinking you'd want a mug with their name on it?? SO weird.

We have a no "donations" rule In our Rules & Regs. It also states that no plants or flowers may be "donated" to our numerous planter areas. It follows the rules that no one may move items out of our recreational common areas. Donations rarely show up and are never kept. But I don't think the rule has anything to do with it.

We encourage donations of books to the book shelves in the gym. The books usually are newer and lots of residents read them. We also encourage donations of current magazines to the gym (no catalogues), and they also are read while residents ride the stationary bikes, use the treadmills, etc. Our custodians recycle or take month-old issues to their Break Room.

I kind of had to giggle at this... We didn't have too much of a problem of people "donating" things to the HOA clubhouse. A few things did show up here and there granite after parties and such. Our clubhouse wasn't overly used for the most part.

What made me laugh is that I have a few of those "donated" items in my house now... One of my older board members a former IRS agent which you had no room to argue with, did not like some of it being there. It was kept in a closet and she wanted it out. So I am now the proud owner of a super huge ugly painting, a metal table (I repainted it), and some Christmas decorations... The painting worked out perfectly in the stair well of my new house. I look at it and it reminds me of all the "good" times... LOL!!!
