Thank you,

Be a homeowner in good standing and voted in by other members. Some HOAs do not even require good standing just member. Read your documents and all questions would be answered. It is all in there...

While Melissa's answer may be applicable in many places, FL has other requirements. You should check your CC&R's and FL law. 720 for HOA's and 718 for condos. Here is a requirement from 720:

720.306 Meetings of members; voting and election procedures; amendments.—

(9)(b) A person who is delinquent in the payment of any fee, fine, or other monetary obligation to the association for more than 90 days is not eligible for board membership. A person who has been convicted of any felony in this state or in a United States District or Territorial Court, or has been convicted of any offense in another jurisdiction which would be considered a felony if committed in this state, is not eligible for board membership unless such felon’s civil rights have been restored for at least 5 years as of the date on which such person seeks election to the board. The validity of any action by the board is not affected if it is later determined that a member of the board is ineligible for board membership.

In addition to the statute Glen sited, there may be additional qualifications listed in your governing documents. Therefore, as others have said, you need to read them as well.

Our bylaws only require that candidates/directors be owners and not convicted felons.

I've seen other bylaws that basically include what Glen found in FL. In addition, I've seen no 2 persons from the same household serving simultaneously; no uncured violations of the HOA's governing docs, no non-residents of premises.

Many governing docs, perhaps most, since Melissa strayed to who appoints directors, state that homeowners vote OR existing board appoints if a vacancy occurs.

So along with everyone els, read your docs.
