I'm a recent board member, and have been tasked with drafting some guidelines regarding vegetable gardens on our community.
We're a NC neighborhood of <200 homes on average lot sizes of 1/4 to 1/3 acre.
Prior boards have outright disallowed vegetable gardens with the fear that people would effectively plant corn mazes in their backyards, so I'm looking for some example guidelines from other boards that I might be able to incorporate.
Currently, I'm looking at the following:
Vegetable gardens will not need ARC approval if the following conditions are met:
• It is located between the rear line of the house and the rear property line and are not visible from the street
• It does not exceed a height of 36” from the ground level <-- corn defense?
• It does not exceed the lesser of 120 sq ft (10x12) in area or 1/4 of undeveloped backyard space.
• It is not planted on a grade exceeding a ratio of 5 feet to 100 feet.
• It does not damage adjoining property through the flow of water onto said property.
• It does not encroach on the community-maintained common area.
I'm debating what would be reasonable from a height perspective, and how to word it based on whether it's a raised bed garden. I'm also debating whether to add a line regarding visibility from neighbors' yards, as many of our lots are unfenced.
I'd appreciate any input you can provide.
Thanks!
