Should a board member abstain from voting on an issue that affects their home? We are replacing wood on a board members home because she has been complaining that the paint job and repair was not sufficient. We received an estimate on her home and her neighbor. I put it out for an email vote since we will not be meeting until June 3 for our next board meeting.

My question, since it affects her home should she abstain from the vote?

thanks,
Maureen

Everything the board votes on affects the board member's home.

However- if a decision affects ONLY the board member's home- then abstaining from a vote is the most proper thing to do.

Remember that what is legal isn't always what is proper.

Directors should do what is proper but must do what is legal.
Should she abstain, in my opinion - yes
Must she abstain, Probably not.
