I am surprised that the newly posted statement from the sponsors of this forum says that this is not the place for questions from individual homeowners.

If only community managers and board members can discuss things here this forum will be MUCH less useful to me.

I started coming here when our HOA was under developer control and as an individual homeowner I got good advice. Now I am on the board and am the Treasurer.

I strongly urge the sponsors to reconsider that restriction.

Dave,

I know what your talking about. I also came here looking for assistance and assistance was provided.

I do know that it was always part of the posting rules BUT it did use the word "may" so it's not an absolute..

I don't know for sure, but what I think the intent of that rule is for those who come here not looking for advice to a problem but validation that what they think is happening to them is correct.

I will say that I do not know of anyone being banned for that reason (but I don't know everything).

I personally like it when we get non-board and non-committee members asking questions. If I've never dealt with the situation being discussed, it allows me to learn the best way to respond if I do encounter the situation in the future.

I don't have any problems with homeowners asking for advice, especially if they are truly interested in how their HOA works. But I am sure that some folks have racked up complaints. (I'm thinking of that guy who keeps suing his HOAs and bankrupting them, yet he still keeps buying homes in deed-restricted communities, off the top of my head.)

As for the spam, I just avoid it, but I'm pretty good at identifying snake-oil salesmen in my old age.

Although we board & committee members simultaneously are homeowners, h'wners who do not volunteer and post here help me see anew the "mysteries" of HOA life & politics that I now take for granted. I think they help keep my perspective open and fresh. Boards can become rather insular.

So I'd like to continue reading posts from them. If they're just cranks, habitual whiners, etc., I'll stop reading their stuff.

Thank you for the feedback.

We don't ban individual homeowners for coming here and asking questions.

However, there was a problem in the past with an 'anti-HOA' crowd trying to use this site as a soapbox, which is not productive for the members.

The point is that this is a place for the people that run and volunteer in HOAs/Condos to meet. Yes, individual homeowner questions can be useful as long as they are asked with a real interest in learning, not just coming here to complain.

I'll modify the note to be more clear.
